BIOSKETCH
Lelika Lazarus, Associate Professor (PhD UKZN), joined the Department of Clinical Anatomy at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (former University of Durban Westville) in 1997. She is a NRF-rated scientist anatomist with various journal publications and presentations at national and international conferences.
Prof Lazarus lectures clinical anatomy at both under and postgraduate levels, and supervises numerous students at Honours, Masters and PhD levels. Her research and teaching interests are primarily in neuroanatomy; craniofacial anatomy; anatomy education; cardiovascular anatomy; clinical anatomy of the sub-acromial complex and human anatomical variations.
She is part of dynamic and diverse neuroanatomy and cranio-facial research teams; the former of which focuses on areas of anatomy that directly relate to clinical settings and neurosurgical procedures such as aneurysms of the anterior communicating artery, variations of the vertebro-basilar system as well as the venous drainage systems of the brain. The latter team focuses on research done in cranio-facial anatomy and reconstructive surgery such as cranio-facial defects and the anatomical basis of surgical repair.
Prof Lazarus is also involved as a collaborator in a research team that is interested in the morphology and morphometry of the scapulo-humeral complex. She is also involved in cardiovascular anatomical research in the area of aortic valves and coronary arterial circulation.
Her extensive experience and training in the anatomical and medical sciences allows her to conduct research on a variety of topics, which provides a multitude of research opportunities for students.
